In 1996, we (Walker and Doug Silsbee) purchased the 63 acre Green farm, just into
Madison County on the way to Marshall. While it was a leap of faith to believe that the 50
year old tobacco barn could become a retreat center, its beauty was already
apparent.
The burnished poles on which decades of tobacco crops had dried, the light streaming into the dark interior through the spaces between the siding boards, the smells and feelings of an old barn filled with history inspired visions of what it could become. A little over a year later, the transformation was complete, with the entire original structure preserved within the beauty of the new Lodge.
Over 35 people contributed to the renovation, which replaced the east end with a spectacular grand window that looks over the valley below. Skylights and lots of glass make the interior light and airy; high cathedral ceilings and walls are finished in lodgepole pine. The balcony railing is crafted from the old tobacco poles. Nine immaculate bedrooms and four bathrooms are alive with light, and smell of fresh wood. Looking up at the new woodwork, the grand window, and the blue sky beyond, one can feel a sense of space and limitless possibility.
The main floor features a full kitchen, a bathroom, and the main hall. The
kitchen has serving windows which open into the main hall, which seats 30
for gatherings. The grand window forms one side of the hall; overhead are
the balcony and the cathedral ceiling. Stairways off the main hall lead
upstairs and down to the bedroom areas.
Five double bedrooms on the second floor open onto the hall and balcony. Each has two twin beds and a ceiling fan. Four have high ceilings, the fifth has opening windows on three sides for lots of breezes and light. Two shared baths and a loft (which can be used as an additional bedroom) complete the upstairs. The basement stays cool, even on the hottest summer days. Two double bedrooms, two singles, and a bathroom open into a spacious living area which can also be used as a meeting room for 12 people. Outside, a porch overlooks the pond, swimming dock, gardens, a waterfall, and benches built from the rocks of the old cabin's chimney. The Boathouse and Pavilion provide additional meeting spaces around the pond. |
